Default Code P0243 on '05 RAM 2500 4x4

I have a P0243 code; Turbo solenoid; code that won't reset and my ACTRON CP 9180 reader will not recognize. I can see the code by doing the key on/off 3 times and the check engine light is on.
My question is: is this a part that fails on occasion and can I, as a fair shadetree mechanic, replace?
It set the first time after a LONG hard pull (on I70 in Utah) pulling my 5th wheel. It reset then but came on again a short time later. I reset it a couple of more times then the ACTRON quit aseeing the code. I am assuming that thew solenoid is bad. The truck stills runs OK and milage is about normal. Am I running a risk of messing up the turbo by still using the truck?
THANKS!!
