I can understand that completely. Too many roads in the UK are just modern paved cart paths, and not much larger either. Having a large truck doesn't makes much sense over there, just like owning one of the tiny vehicles here is looked oddly upon. Unless you live and work entierly in a large metropolitan area it doesn't make sense to own something like a smart car.

In my case, I grew up with landrovers everywhere because it was a requirement to have 4wd and an enclosed cab when you were in the bush. I don't see much reason for them here except as status symbols.
