I tow a 7x16 enclosed trailer about 10 times a year (weighs 4000lbs loaded) and the truck could pull it but spent most of the time in 5th gear at 3000rpm on the highway at 70mph. Got about 8mpg while towing. Over the winter, I got a CAI, superchips programmer, and a 180 thermostat. The truck ran way better and actually had a bit of spunk to it. I got a load leveling hitch and went out with my 1st trip towing the traier in March. Same old thing.... Pretty disappointing. Last week, I went to the dealer and traded it in for a 1500 crew cab 2wd with a 5.7 and 3.92 gears. No comparison!!!!!! The 5.7 hauls ass and gets better mileage. IMO, they should only offer the 4.7 in regular cab 1500s.
There may not be a comparison for you...but I hauled 6,000 several times with my 4.7 when it had 3:55's, and I never had a problem. She was fully capable. A little slow and did drink gas, but when I am towing I am not supposed to be driving like a maniac. Maybe there was something wrong with your truck? 330ft-lbs is more than sufficient. In fact, I have towed more with less. People tow 6k+ with 2nd gens all the time, the 360 was a dog compared to a 4th gen 4.7.
