^I agree. I've hooked up a few thousand pounds to my truck several times (quad cab with 3.55) and barely noticed it. Mpg goes down to like 14ish city/17ish hwy but that's still pretty good. My buddy's 5.4L F150 has more trouble pulling than my 4.7L(until we get over ~5,000lb), and his is only extended cab, and he has lower gearing. He also gets about 12city/15hwy(when not towing) I believe and I get like 17city/21hwy. Several factors that make mpg vary but it's close. Just like AOO said, you're not supposed to try to hold 80 mph with a trailer.

I've even hooked up 8,000lb to my truck and towed it a few miles, it wasn't really bad at all. I'm sure it would have been on the highway though.
