At the shop I work at, Most of the time when the transfer case cracks...breaks.... It usually has to do with the front driveshaft. A bad U-Joint will take out a T-Case by vibrating it to death. On the early 00's and up there is no disconnect with the front end...EVERYTHING turns! You just lock it together (front and rear) with the transfer case lever. At least my old 95 Ram has a front axle disconnect (still spins the spider gears though).
