Manufacturers have multiple suppliers for any part. For example, if XYZ had a strike and caused a supply problem, the manufacturer would be seriously affected.

It's possible that the affected pinion nuts were supplied by a specific supplier. A retainer is easier to install, and reduces the possibility of changing the pinion depth when the pinion nut is re-tightened.
