Chrysler recalling pickups

Posted on October 8th, 2012 • by Bill Cawthon
Chrysler is recalling certain model year 2009-2010, Ram 1500 and Dodge Dakota trucks, manufactured from July 1, 2009, through November 30, 2009, because a rear axle pinion nut may loosen due to a lack of adhesive.
Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will install a pinion nut retainer, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in November 2012. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753.
Chrysler’s recall campaign number is M34. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

The complaints allege failures at various speeds with eight of the incidents reporting failures at speeds of 35 mph or greater. Four of the complaints involving higher speed incidents allege that the failure resulted in a loss of control (e.g., vehicle spin, skid or yaw), including one resulting in a crash into a concrete barrier. One complaint reports that the failure was caused by loosening of the rear differential pinion nut. Most of the complaints allege that the failure resulted in drive shaft failure including one that reported the detached shaft end pu

Most of the complaints allege that the failure resulted in drive shaft failure including one that reported the detached shaft end punctured the fuel tank. A Preliminary Evaluation has been opened to assess the scope, frequency and potential safety consequences of the alleged defect.
