If I was going to build a motor for a truck I think I'd look for a cheap big block. An old 383 should still be cheap, at least compared to a 440. There were a few truck 383's with four bolt mains. A forged crank and you can slap almost any heads on it. The best power for a truck imho is low end grunt and lots of it. You could do this fairly cheap if you're resourceful. You'd lose the fuel injection unless you paid for a custom system. I think you'd be about the same mpg wise, but have alot more power in reserve.
