Default Reverse Light Switch not making contact IN the transmission....

I've got the nv3500 5 speed in my '96, and the reverse switch was bad.... or so I thought. To be clear, I'm a wiring guy by trade. I metered the switch while the stick was in N then in R. I pulled it out , plugged in a new one, and the backup lights never came on.

I can push the switch in with my hand, while it's plugged in, and the reverse lights come right on. When the switch is actually mounted in the transmission, and nice and tight, the ball never makes contact with whatever it's supposed to inside the gear case.

Does anyone have some insight on the inner workings of this tranny?
