I have not tried it myself but I have done a lot of reading on the topic and my understanding is just as you put it....305s should fit fine on a pre-2006 truck. The difference is that the pre-2006 trucks had torsion bar front suspensions and the 2006-up trucks switched to a coilover front suspension. My understanding is that the rubbing on the newer trucks usually involved the wider tire rubbing on the upper control arm. All that being said, I am sure someone that has actually done it will chime in.
