If a shock is within it's range of travel it provides no resistance to the ride height. In other words, a shock would have to be bottomed out/fully extended to affect suspension height. It's just a suspension dampener, not a lifting or lowering device, as it merely controls the oscillation of the suspension thru it's travel cycle. An average person can manipulate a standard shock by hand from fully compressed to fully extended, now just imagine the weight/force of a 5000 lb. vehicle applied to that and it's quite obvious a shock is not a lift/lowering device, unless we're talking air shocks, which is a completely different animal than a common passive hydraulic shock.
