There are several potential causes and this is one of them. Is the MIL on and what codes are stored in the PCM? Another cause could be a leaking intake plenum pan gasket. Then there's the usual lack of maintainence issues such as old plugs, wires, cap and rotor. Other defective parts could be an ignition cooil breaking down or a sensor going bad.
