Ram 2500/3500/4500/5500 6.7L Cummins Diesel As part of our tireless commitment to the improvement of our products, Chrysler continuously monitors various Key Performance Indicators that help identify opportunities to enhance the overall experience of our customers.
Highlighting the value of this process are enhancements to Dodge Ram Trucks equipped with the 6.7L Cummins Turbo Diesel Engine. Specifically, Customer CAIRS related to 6.7L equipped trucks decreased by 99%, engine warranty service decreased by 93%, reacquisition rates decreased by 92%, and overall repeat repairs dropped by 45%. Contributing to these improvements in customer satisfaction are enhancements to the Engine Control Module’s software, EGR Valve, Turbocharger, Fuel Injection System, as well as improvements in diagnostic procedures.
In further effort to assist our customers, Chrysler is also attacking problems created when customers receive substandard quality fuel in the market place. When a customer acquires fuel that is contaminated with moisture or particulates, precision fuel injection components can be damaged or not operate as designed. While fuel quality is a condition beyond Chrysler’s control and damage resulting from substandard fuel is not warrantable, we and Cummins are making improvements to the diesel fuel filtration system to try and minimize this outside threat for our customers.
Effective January 2009, all 6.7L Cummins Turbo Diesel Engines are equipped with a dual element filter which provides water stripping capabilities through a 10 micron rated filter and particulate removing capabilities through a 5 micron rated filter. This new filter can be retrofitted onto previously released Cummins 6.7L engines and is currently the only 6.7L fuel filter available from Mopar. P/N 68061633AA is a filter and shell assembly and should only be used the first time the filter is installed on a vehicle previously equipped with the single stage 7 micron filter (2007 – early 2009 models). Once the shell has been replaced and on all 2009 6.7L engines built after January 2009 and 2010 Cab Chassis models, filter replacement intervals can be performed using P/N 68061634AA which is the filter element only. 2010 – 2011 models (except 2010 Cab Chassis) are serviced with P/N 68065608AA.
Close attention to owner maintenance is a critical component of maximizing the operational life of any motor vehicle. This need is greatly magnified for vehicles with precision injection systems designed to meet 2010 emission standards, including Dodge Ram Trucks equipped with the 6.7L Cummins Turbo Diesel engine. Customers should be encouraged to familiarize themselves with maintenance requirements and recognize that operating conditions and driving habits can greatly impact the needs for additional and heightened maintenance intervals. Fuel filters should be replaced every 12
months, 15,000 miles, or earlier if exposed to fuel contamination with particulates or moisture. Likewise, excessive idle time will reduce the useful life of fuel and air filtration systems.
Although, adequate maintenance is the customer’s responsibility, dealers should encourage them to pay close attention to their specific operating environments and adjust their maintenance practices accordingly.
Also, keep in mind that Mopar has available severe duty fuel tank vent kits. These kits provide improved resistance to dirt, dust, and moisture that may enter into the fuel tank through the roll over vent valve in extreme conditions. Dirt, dust, and moisture will contribute to premature contamination and saturation of the fuel filter. Part numbers for these kits are identified in Service Bulletin 14-002-10.
