Red face Ticking sound with cold start

I have a 2004 dodge ram 1500 that has a loud ticking noise with a cold start but stops with acceleration. I had the oil changed but it still does it. It seems like it is getting louder. Has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone else know know what is causing this? Please help.

Ram-girl I assume you have the 4.7 L. What kind of oil did you put in? Believe it or not I had the same noise. which I suspected was a lifter. I changed out my -drive-by-oil change-
and put in Amsoil. I wasn't a believer in there claims however my tick tick is gone. Must have been just some gunk on the lifter. Apparently the 4.7 are notorious for sludge and gunk!!

Default Not a promoter, however

I had a tick the same as you describe, it could be many things. I got rid of mine changing my oil with Amsoil and their long mileage filter. My noise is gone, but again there are lots of things that could be causing yours. Funny I spilt some oil on my wood top bench that was black from god knows what, dirt, paint, etc. when I wiped up the oil the wood was like new. Just a coincidence. Anyway I am trying this product and seems to be working for me.

Default Are you using synthetic?

You didn't say if your Castrol was synthetic.

It was not synthetic. Would synthetic make the tick stop?

You might want to check your manifold as well. Mine is an 09 and they had issues with the bolts breaking. It caused a very loud ticking sound on cold start ups.

I also have a 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 quadcab. I have the same ticking noise. But once the engine heats up it goes away. But after reading this thread, I am going to try Amsoil for sure.

I too have the same problem on my 04 ram. I've tried Bar's engine repair after an oil change, nothing. I've though about several issues were wrong. Timing chain, oil pump, heads, piston rings, crank.... I can't figure it out. I also have white smoke at random times at cold start. It's not every time, but every once in a while white smoke will come out of the exhaust and stink like melting plastic, and fuel. It's only at cold start.

Fallen rocker arm may cause ticking sound, relatively common problem with these engines. Before I was mechanically inclined, my truck had a tick coming from the engine and had to take it to a buddy to open it up. Picked up the rocker arm and put it back on. Not saying this is the first place to look, but if all else fails.
