Default Hauling Quads while towing

I use my 2012 1500 with the Hemi 5.7ltr to two my TT. I want to bring along some quads and have been looking for something to use. I belong to a Keystone TT forum and they suggested I get a Ultimate Rack system (see link below). I calculate that the quads and rack will weigh around 1,200 lbs and my TT weighs 5,000 lbs. I looked up my trucks capabilities on the Ram Trucks website and it says that I am well within my towing and payload capacities even with passengers. My question is have any of you tried towing with this type of setup? I am afraid my truck will bog down too much with that much weight....

You're still overweight. 1200lbs for quad and deck plus +/- 10% of your trailer weight as tongue load puts you at 1700lbs before you add any occupants other than the driver. According to Ram Body Builder our payload is 1455lbs.

If you want to haul the quad legally you need a mini toy hauler that will be within the tow rating of your truck or you need more truck.

Install some airbags. Am sure it will make up for the 250 lbs mentioned above and your setup wanted.

Legally?? Who gave the cops the link to the Ram Body Builder? LOL

I wanted to install the air bags anyways to get rid of the butt drag when you have I decent load in the back, thanks for the suggestion. I am confused though (nothing new). I looked up my trucks specs under the Light Duty rigs Ramtrucks.com with and using the graph I can have 1,480 lbs payload, haul 7,000 lbs and still and carry two passengers. Wouldn't their chart factor in the tongue/trailer weight?

Ah, rookie mistake. The payload is reduced by all passengers, excluding driver, the tongue wieght and any other weight you are carrying inyour truck. At 7000lbs trailer weight you ru about 700-950lbs tongue weight depending on the trailer. Being conservative, deduct 700 off 1480 and you are left with 780lbs. From that deduct, assuming adult passengers, 400lbs and you are left with380lbs of payload. Take away the random stuff usually under thenbackseat of the truck and you are probably only left with180lbs payload.throw something in the bed and you are done.

Thanks for the heads-up, should of got a 2500 but I don't use the truck for work so I could not justify the gas

Payload is the downfall of all 1/2 tons. Travel trailers are normally 13% toung weight (more depending on your propane and battery config). You could likely pull the trailer and one quad (no rack).

I plan to tow my 19' travel trailer (5200 lbs GVWR) and one atv in the bed. But, my payload is 1610 lbs.

Payload is a gray area as it *can* be exceded (ie: airbags help), BUT NEVER excede the axle ratings or tire ratings.
