Default Has anyone seen.....

Has anyone seen any new reports on the Hemi 8 speed and how it compares acceleration and mileage wise to the 6 speed? I know AllPar tested one so I would think they are available for the magazine guys to test.

Anyone ???

I have not seen anything published yet, however that doesn't mean it isn't out there, I too will be looking at some youtube videos of the 8 speed acceleration as soon as they are on there

Thanks

I've got a reliable source who says it'll be about the same mpg during highway driving but 1-2 mpg better during city driving.

I expect the 8-speed will probably be a bit faster acceleration, but long-term reliability was the deciding factor for me when I changed my order to Hemi/6-speed. They've worked out the bugs with the current transmission, and I wasn't interested going with an unproven transmission.

There are a couple of youtube videos about acceleration and the dealerships have a brochure showing just over 6 second 0-60 I think it said...maybe 6.5 seconds or so I forget. With the same motor, rear end and roughly the same weight I don't think having that much lower first will make a huge difference. Noticeable but, I didn't order one hoping for speed...that's what Challengers are for.

On the reliability subject...the ZF 8 speed has been proven for years...simple design and has been in BMW, Audi, Bentley, Jaguar, Maserati...to name a few...for nearly 5 years.

As far as MPG, I expect about 10-15% gains in city economy due to quick shifts and close gearing as well as the lower first gear to get going easier...on the highway probably 8-10% gains due to lighter/fewer components creating less parasitic loss of power to the ground...So that would be about 1.5-2 mpg city and 1-1.5 mpg hwy. Not a whole lot...but adds up. Toss a CAI on and a free flowing muffler...gain another 1-2 mpg. Pretty good for a full size truck with 400+ ft lbs of torque.

Another thing to keep in mind...Ram offers that 100,000 mile drivetrain warranty...they would not do this with a trans they were not pretty sure of as it could then bankrupt them with warranty repairs...
