Default Rough idle comes and goes? Also idles at low rpm?

I have had this problem off and on with my truck shaking real bad at idle both in park and while stopped at a light for example. And I get a CEL. Have'nt had it code checked yet.
But after a bit the rough idle goes away.
I removed and cleaned the TB yesterday and it was not very dirty. There is a valve on the drivers side valve cover near the back that looks to be leaking oil. I'm not sure if this is a breather or what. Its black with blue at the base of it
Noticed today my truck was idling around 500.
Any help would be appreciated.
Truck:
08 1500 4.7 V8 Flex Fuel 2WD
Has about 55000 miles on it.
Any help would be appreciated

I'm not sure if this works on yours, but I have a 2002 4.7L and it works on mine:

To read the codes put the key in the ignition, turn it to on (all dashboard lights up), then off, then on again, then off again, then on and STOP here with it on.

The digital odometer reads off any codes that are stored. I do this whenever my CEL comes on. I have a Haynes manual with the codes, but if you don't have one then there are web sites that have them. Just google it.

Or you can post the code(s) here and I can check for you. But google might be faster.

Anyway, you've come to the right place (this board, not me specifically). Once you post the codes someone will be along who has seen it/done it/fixed it. You should do a search of RamTech's posts, he knows a ton and has helped me out in the past.

Hope this helps. Let us know what you find out.

keep in mind you can alwasy pull into your discount auto store, or pep boys, or advance auto store and walk up to the counter and ask them if you can have a guy come out to the parking lot with a code reader and read your coads for you. they do it for free. wright the codes down and post them or google them.

Off the top of my head it sounds like one of your Coil on packs went bad a little early. I had this happen to me before. One of my COP started to go bad. At first it was only slow and sluggish at high RPM's when I was gunning the vehicle. Then it was bogging down at lower idle speeds but would sometimes go away on its own. I put new coil packs in the v8 and it was problem solved

Well we would need the code before i would start asuming things. It could be anything from bad plugs to bad o2 and everything between. The code will help guide you (and us helping you) in the right direction in not on a wild goose chase. Right now im at school and have access to Snapon's ShopKey if you need additional help

Well I tried to turn the ignition on and off 3 times to see if I could get codes and it didnt work. I havent had any issues since I cleaned the TB but I feel it will happen again since the TB was really clean. Ill keep watching and waiting I guess.

Switch around the coils and see what happens! I would say a new coil is in order for number 5 at this point! Make sure you check your connections.

Changed my #5 coil and all the top plugs since I was in there. Running much better. Had to fabricate a 5/8 plug socket to fit though. Crossing my fingers this was the fix.
