But why is it so difficult just to fugure out which oil to put in my truck? I love my truck but this kinda silly. Thanks for the input, as it really helped. I will post what I find out.
The 2500 with the 5.7L Hemi does not have MDS (Multi Displacement System), basically at certain speeds the 1500 with MDS will shut 4 cylinders off to theoretically become more fuel efficient. Lots and lots of theories and opinions on this. From what I have read the difference between the two engines is that the 1500 has more horsepower, MDS and less torque than the 2500 which has slightly less hp, no MDS and more torque.

It isn't hard to figure out. On a 2500, you can use 5w-30 or 5w-20 if you aren't over 14,000 combined. I put 5w-20 in mine because it was left over from when I had a 1500 Hemi. When I buy oil the next time, it will be 5w-30. IMHO, it is better to use the heavier oil in this application. But either can be safely used as long as you are not over 14,000 combined.

The 1500 gets 5w-20 all the time. Doesn't matter how much you tow. There is a TSB out with this info. Even if you are not using the MDS, the oil ports and valves are still in the engine that require that specific weight of oil.

I read somewhere on here that 5w-30 in a 1500 will cause problems. A guy had a Dodge dealer put the wrong weight oil in and it caused a CEL when the owner of the truck went to leave the lot.The MDS will supposedly not engage and it will cause a CEL. The almighty ECU knows all! lol Another thing I read, probably b.s. but the screens in the oiling system on the 1500 series can blow out with 5w-30.. I have been using lightweight synthetics for years, there is no need to go to 5w-30 unless you are putting a serious load on the engine. Thinner oil flows easier and helps prevent the #1 cause of engine wear, cold starts..

The 5w-30 does cause problems with the 1500. That is why they put out the TSB. But this thread is about the 2500 which it is safe to use the 5w-30 in.
