Default 86 dodge trans

I have an 86 dodge w250, 5.9L 360 v8, with the 727 3speed automatic transmission. I want to put a 4or5 speed standard trans in it, but not sure what to get? The 727 slips bad even though it has been rebuilt. A standard would give me better low range and high range gears for pulling and highway speeds. Just wondering if there was a standard that was considered tougher and more dependable?

Well a properly built 727 is extremely reliable! Just not reasonable for todays economy, however you could do three things, get a 46RH or 47RH which is a variant of the 727, it is internally similar to the 727 except Chrysler designed a 4th gear extension housing. The other option is buy a 727 OD Unit, some companies have OD units for 727's, the last option is put something else in there. I would do a 46RH or 47RH.
