Default Oil Change

At what mileage are you all doing your first oil change? I assume Synthetic is fine for the first change. Thanks, Sean

Yes synthetic is fine right out of the gate. As for when, you will find many different responses. I may be a little different, but I feel the break-in period yields fairly nasty oil and sooner rather than later is better. In my case on my new 2012 and previous new vehicles, I have changed it at 500 miles, then again at 1000 miles. Maybe overkill, I dunno, but it makes me all warm and fuzzy. With my 2012, since I planned to do 2 oil changes within 1000 miles the first one I added Mobil 5000 a very good dino oil and it was on sale at 50% off. Then at 1000 miles I added synthetic (Amsoil OE). Since I have the OE synthetic I will change at 5-6K, then I am considering moving up to the Signature Series and change it once a year or 15/25K. The oils, even dino, and filters have gotten so much better the 3K changes really are a thing of the past and is a waste of money.

Synthetic always (welcome to the world of $100+ oil changes) -every 6,000 miles or 10,000K's. Your truck will tell you as well if it slips your mind.

i did my first at 3,000 miles, because the 2009 manual was written by a person that was not informed about lubricants
Then i changed over to synthetic & i still change motor oil at 5,000 miles, or close to it

I also buy the Mobile One at Walmart, the WIX oil filter i pick up at a auto parts store & i have the dealership do my changes

Someone mentioned that they didn't trust their dealership to use what they brought in
I think if you are thinking that same way
just scratch the filter with a scribe & you will know it is changed

What 100 for an oil change for synthetic are you nuts,oh wait thats right i get my oil fro free lol

But ya its alot but well worth it.

As far as changing it you should have an oil light on the truck that will come on to tell you when to do it but if you dont trust that then like he other guy said i did mine at 1k then 5k now i do it at 8k.
If you pick your own time frame just reset the light when it comes on.

And also if you do alot of city driving start and stop then do it sooner

K&N oil filters are very well built. I use them in all my vehicles. They are inexpensive and come with a handy 1" nut on the bottom for ease of install and removal.

I have not looked under the 2013 Rams
They were talking about switching back to the Cartridge type oil filters
To keep the Spin On Filters out of the city landfills
