Default 2012 engine problems

I have a 2012 2500 megacab that has 23,000 miles on it. For the last few months I have been noticing a knock that is only bad when the engine is cold. Also at startup I am noticing a antifreeze smell that goes away after a minute or two. I took it to the deal today and found out that they are going to put a new short block in it. Is this a good thing or should I try to get a new complete engine. Thanks for the help

A long block would be better to me. But if they are putting in a short block with no arguing or "thats a normal knocking sound in your engine Sir". I would let them do it. Do you know what was wrong with your engine?

There was recent and lengthy thread here on a similar problem not so long ago.

The OP's truck engine sounded like a diesel when starting cold. Long story short and if I recall, the problem was crankshaft bearing related. The dealer and Chrysler installed a new short block and the problem went away.

I would push for new engine. No partially rebuilt engine will ever be as good as factory new engine. Don't let them make this your problem.
23K miles, obviously there was something wrong to start with.
I have knock when cold and only have 9K but have had this issue since it had 5K. But no antifreeze smell.
One dealer said normal, second not normal but don't want to touch it since first dealer already replaced lifters at 3700 miles

Well, I just got back today and tried to get them to do a complete engine, but said that they would only do a short block. I didn't fight to hard with them because I am surprised that they are actually doing this. From what I have read on this site and the problems other people are having with their dealers, I feel pretty good about it. Am I wrong?

Short block will be fine. Take it and run you should have no issues at all.
