How many km on the truck? With my 11 it didn't really start using ECO mode until I had a few thousand on the clock, however with my 13 the entire trip home from Calgary she was in ECO mode a bunch and on good long highway runs always is. Could be the computer learning your driving habits. A good test is get her up to speed and just ease back on the accelerator and you should see her go into ECO almost immediately.

Is this an automatic thing, or do you have to turn it on?

On my Laramie the Eco on the display was turned on, but I don't know if someone who looked at the truck previously did that or if it ships from the factory that way. The Eco light can be turned on and off if I remember correctly.

Seeing the ECO displayed in the EVIC is an option you can select to display or not...HOWEVER you cannot actually disable ECO mode the engine will continue to drop 4 cylinders when full power is not required.

I believe putting the truck in manual shift mode disables the MDS. The transmission will still shift automatically up to the gear selected, so if you just put it to 6 it will be the same minus the MDS.
