Default Advice on Tires???

Hi all, I'm new here and if you can direct me if there are threads on tires. I may be asking a question that's been answered.
I have a 2002 Ram 1500 Quad Truck. My husband passed and I'm muddling through keeping it running. It was his and I'm so ignorant on it. He drove and maintained it and it's my only asset left.
I need tires and don't have a clue. (Maybe even used ones) I'm going to do two at a time, cost is a factor for me. I drove it 1800 miles moving with a 16' trailer. I need to return where I came from. With or without the trailer. A lot of mileage on it.
Appreciate any recommendations (brands?) and thank you very much!!! The tires are 245/70R17's

Michenlin are the best in my book, but they are expensive. Coopers are a good tire.

I'm very sorry for your loss. As for tires, Tirerack has some decent tires for the price. Like the Firestone Destination LE 2 for $134 each.

I'm very sorry for your loss also...

Here's another place you might want to check with also: http://www.tiremonkey.com/

Also one thing to take into consideration about tires on a truck - if you plan to haul any heavy loads you might want to get a higher load range.

This is an online Wiki that will explain all of this to you and I hope it helps:

Sorry for your loss...

As for tires, the best price on popular tires I've found have been from tirebuyer.com As for selecting the best tire, I normally read the reviews on tire rack and tire buyer than make a decision from there.

BTW, most national tire chains with a local presence will match tire rack/tire buyer prices + install, if you show them the online price. This might be the best way for you to go since you won't need to worry about having tires delivered and finding an installer...

On used tires, I really can't make a recommendation. I've used them, in the past, but that was because I got them for free, from a friend that worked at a tire shop, so I knew they were still good. Do not just go by what a used tire looks like. Even a very good looking used tire might be bad because of the age or something internal. If you get a used tire, make sure you look at the manufacture date on the tire. If it's more then a few years old, I'd pass. If a tire takes to much weight to balance, there maybe a problem too. I've had brand new tires that were bad and had to exchange them.. I have no idea what the dealers do with them.... For all I know, some unethical dealer/person might put them on the used market...

Good luck on your tire search!

Thank you all so much! The information helped me a lot and an education too. I didn't know about load ranges. We usually had Michelins on it. I'd read about Kumho's or Yohohama's as being an alternative.
I will stay with new ones. I'm not experienced. I truly appreciate your help. Will look up tires with more knowledge now.
One more question if I may, is E load an appropriate one for my vehicle or what would you recommend? Thanks!

Sorry for your loss.

As stated above most national tire chains will match online pricing for tires. I would recommend to you checking out NTB, this is where I used to get alot of my work done in the past as far as tires went when I lived a little closer, I still go there for alignments but not so much tires anymore, simply because the drive there doesn't compensate for the extra fuel vs few dollars in savings. I would recommend as far as tires go Michelin's they are not the cheapest tires, however they are very good quality and will not wear down near as fast as cheaper tires will thus in the long run saving you money.

Thanks
Jeremiah

Stick to a C-rated tire. Unless you are offroading the truck all the time and want the added thickness that the 10-ply (E rated) tire provides, stick to 6-ply (C-rated) for lower rolling resistance, more supple ride, and lower cost.

Where are you located? I'm on the Ga. S.C. border. I work for Bridgestone/Firestone and I get pretty good discounts plus free mount and balance. I'd be more than happy to help you. pm me tel. number if you are within a couple hours.
