Default loose lifter

I have a 1999 ram 1500 with the 5.9 magnum. I stopped for gas 2 days ago and when I started it back up I have a lifter tap in it so I pulled the valve cover off to find where it was tapping and I have one rocker that is loose but the bolt is tight. any ideas as to what I may need to do to fix this?

Sounds like you found the lifter that's making the noise.

yes I found the one making all the noise but when the push rod is down the rocker is loose and I am not sure if that means I have a bad valve spring or if the valve is stuck open....I don't want to pull the head off unless I have no choice

OK, here's your options. Either the cam lobe is wiped, the lifter collapsed, the spring has totally given up, or the valve is stuck open. I doubt the lobe is wiped, you should have noticed that beforehand, the noise is pretty awful, and you would have a noticeable miss. i have never heard of a spring giving up like that, and if it did, you would be able to fiddle around with it and remove the keeper, then the valve will fall into the cylinder. A valve stuck open is possible, however, I am not 100% sure on the 5.9, but I had a V6 in a Dakota once come in with a broken timing chain, and all the valves & pushrods bent when it broke. I believe the Magnums are interference, so the piston will have hit the valve. I would bet on a collapsed lifter, they are roller, but hydraulic, and if it's lost it's ability to hold pressure, there you go. I'm very curious as to what you find.
