Default Should I swap my 3.55 to 3.92 gears?

I have a 2012 Ram 1500 Express, with the 3.55 gears. Towing capacity is 8750 I believe, or thereabouts. Goes up to 10050 or something like that with the 3.92's.

My situation is this - I currently tow a Sea Ray 215 Express Cruiser on an aluminum Venture trailer. The boat is around 3900 lbs, the trailer I think 800 or 900 lbs. With fuel, fresh water, and gear, I think I'm probably around 5500-6000 lbs. I towed this last season every weekend about an hour each way, and it worked great, could barely tell the boat was even back there.

We are in the process of buying a new boat. It's a 25 foot Crownline 250 cr, which is a much heavier boat and trailer combo. Boat is 6400, trailer around 1200-1300. I plan on towing it with as little fuel and water as possible, and it will only be a couple of times a year as we are keeping it at a slip in-season. It's a trailer slip, so I'll have to unload and load each weekend, but that shouldn't be an issue I'd think. Factoring in fuel and gear, probably gonna be close to 8500 lbs.

Where we are towing it, the terrain is mostly rolling hills or flat. I have a weight distribution hitch, though I've never used the spring bars for the current boat.

My real question here is, should I consider swapping out those 3.55 for 3.92 gears? I talked to my dealer and he priced at 1200 per axle. I don't think I'll be towing up any mountains because quite frankly I'm nervous about that much weight on those hills up, and down. Is it worth it for me to get this done?

I would not bother with the 3.92's. Go 4.10's maybe, but me personally I would go with the 4.56 gears. If you plan to tow a lot it will help the whole truck last longer.
3.55 to 3.92 is only 2-300 rpms difference. These trucks should have had 4.10's standard imo.

Yeah, that is my plan in general, see how it does when I drive it home from the Marina in a couple of weeks.

I should be fine on tongue weight, but I think I'll put in some airbags in the rear coils to be on the safe side. Tongue weight should be 7% of the total, so a max of 590. The 1500 is rated for 1050 lbs tongue, is that right?

Also, the weight distribution hitch is probably not a great idea I think with surge brakes, plus I really shouldn't need it with the tongue weight being well under the limit.

For two or so trips a year, 40 miles, I am just trying to weigh the benefits of the 3.92 gears vs cost. The mileage drops about 1-2 mpg from what I hear.

That's the thing though, I am only going to be towing it a couple times a year, 40 miles each way. I just wasn't sure of how well it would pull on the rolling hill terrain with the 3.55's, or if it was hurting the drivetrain any with just a couple of trips a year. In other words, if it costs me 2400 to do this, but saves me in repairs later, I'm all for it.

I agree with what was said earlier.. a good upgrade plan is 3.55 - 4.10, for 3.92's the upgrade is 4.56... and yes, your drivetrain will live longer with less stress on it...

Based on your argument, 3.92 - 4.10 is not even a 5% change

and the rpm difference would be 80 rpm @ 2000 rpm


I do agree tho, if you are going 3.92, may as well move up to the 4.10, but to say they should have been stock, not agreeing there
