I am still somewhat new to the forums. Have read quite a bit since joining but not posted a lot. Figured it's time to chime in. It drives me crazy to see people posting comments like "what do you expect for mileage in a 5000lb truck" or "if you want good mileage go by a car". Just because a guy enjoys driving a full size truck does not mean he doesn't care about getting good Gas Mileage. Anyone who has seen the price of gas go up $3/gallon in the last 4 years probably cares to some degree about their gas mileage. Now that I'm off that soap box....

I have a 2012 Hemi Sport, Crew Cab, 4x4. Bought it in March of '12, so about 9 months ago. I didn't expect to get 20mpg in the city or on the Freeway but I was hoping for better than what I usually get. I don't drive with a lead foot, try to ease in and out of lights and the best I typically get around town is 13.5 mpg. Only performance mod I currently have is a K&N drop in filter. Just made a 240 mile, round trip freeway drive last weekend. On the way there got 13.3 mpg going 78mph. On the way back, got 13.5 mpg going 78 mph. I have noticed if I can keep it from 65mph-68mph on the freeway the MDS can stay engaged. But anything over 70mph and good luck. I live in Southern Idaho and speed limit here is 75mph on the Freeway. Being winter we also have terrible winter gas so that has dropped my mileage approx 1.5 mpg. Depending on where you live, in winter the gas can definitely have something to do with your mileage. But I have also found that whether I drive with a light foot or get on it a little more often I still get the same mileage in town. I have been speaking with a local truck performance shop about things I can do to increase mileage and they are recommending I remove the "suitcase muffler" and install a high flow muffler (just the muffler, not the entire exhaust) along with an AFE brand CAI. I also asked them their thoughts on adding a programmer but they didn't think it would do much for adding mpg. Well actually they said it "could" potentially add maybe 1.5mpgs on the freeway but they weren't even sold on that. I am still trying to find more research on the forums to support the investment will actually payoff. But if I could increase my mileage even 1.5 - 2 mpgs around town I would be happier. With technology these days I have to believe they can squeeze more mpgs out of these engines in city driving. Probably worth noting also that I have been using 87 octane. I see that some of you guys have reccommended using 89 so I tried that the last couple tanks. Hasn't helped so far, but again we have terrible winter gas here. Might help more in spring, summmer, fall. If anyone else has suggestions on increasing mpgs I'd love to hear them. Sorry for the long rant.

wolfman01 Im not sure if your comment was directed at me or not, but my truck does not sit and idle, and I am very easy around town on the pedal. As far as what you think you are getting for fuel mileage, I wouldn't hold your breath on the accuracy of the meter in the truck. Mine is usually off by 2+ mpg. I gave up on that as any way of getting an accurate fuel mileage. The biggest thing that bugs me is that I go from a 2010 to a 2012, a 5 speed to a 6 speed and 3.92 gears to 3.55 gears, and the fuel mileage is considerably worse. That is driving the same route to work, with the same driving style and using the same gas station as before.

Default Lost MPG

Hey Peeps,

I have a 2003 Dodge Ram Hemi 4x4. I have had it 8 or 9 months. I was getting 14 mpg in the city and 16 mpg on the hwy. All on a sudden I'm down to 10 mpg or under weather on the hwy or city.

I changed the oil, new plugs and wires and still no change still 10 mpg. Any Ideas ?

I just made a trip and got 16.5 sppeds where from 78 to 68 and then went north hour drive and got 17.5 I use nothing but 89 octane I have 4900 miles on it! you can't put E10 in a hemi unless you have made the changes to the feul lines.

To jfuhrmei; I am sure you will get better numbers as you break in that new Hemi. Got my 2nd 2012 4x4 CC Hemi with 3.55's with nearly 13000 miles and I average 15.6mpg city/hwy mix and 21mpg hwy averaging 72mph on flat elevation. Still, I'd say your winter blend or your so called flex fuel sucks and hurts any V8's economy numbers. Didn't know you can run E85 in these. Manual says 89 is recommended but 87 is tolerable.

My 2013 Big Horn gets about 12.5 around town. And a recent day trip to Jersy Shore averaged 17.1 going there and 16.5 on the way back. Probably head wind. I can't complain my 2005 was lucky to brake out of single digits in cold weather and best it did on highway was 15.

My 05 4x4 with 3.92 gears I get about 14mpg mixed. I noticed if I run two lane highways about 60mph I can get 17-18mpg. anything above 65mph the wind resistance really starts killing the mpg. My 96 sport 318 stick got 17mpg in all driving conditions until you went over 65mph. I'm hoping my 2013 on order can do a little better.

Ram will pass everything but a gas station. I had a 2005 f150 with the 4.6l that had no power n got maybe 11 mpg so I figure these trucks are waaaaaay faster and that mileage ain't bad considering it's a full size truck.

2012 Laramie Longhorn 4x4 3.92, bone stock w/Bullydog. 20.3 mpg over a 167 mile trip, 72-75 mph (mostly on cruise control), 90% hwy (got off the fwy a couple times for some side trip stuff). There's about 1000 ft. overall elevation drop from me to SD.
My trip back was stuck in traffic almost the whole way (easter weekend) and my 20.3 dropped to 17.6 for the 334 trip.
My prior trips to SD without the BD, I was always 18-18.5.. usually the same speed.

I also just bought the RAM 2012 1500 with the HEMI. I love the truck but the fuel is an issue for me. I as the others am getting about 11 mpg and for a single cab truck I would have expected a little better mpg than a four door model. It just turned 2300 miles and I have emptied the bank in the gas tank. I am hoping that with mileage it will get better. My other new trucks I had all seemed to get what they got from begining to the end, they never changed with mileage. the only thing I can think of is to maybe put a tunner on it but I can't see spending the money when I just bought a new truck that should be getting better mileage. It is after all 2012 not 1972. I love the truck other wise i wouldnt have bought it and in weighing the fuel est. it was in the same bracket as the other trucks in its class, but is clearly not meating up to the numbers.
