Default Installed factory class 4 receiver hitch today.

This topic started on the classifieds with me trying to find a used factory hitch.
http://www.ramforumz.com/showthread.php?t=138437

It evolved into a hitch discussion so I thought I would wrap it up here. No one answered the plea for a factory hitch so I bought one at the dealer. My research on the web turned up part number 55398274AC (confirmed by the local Dodge parts dept.) for a class 4 WELDED hitch/cross member not a bolt on (class 3) receiver tube kit. When it arrives the next day it looks right, but has the part number 55398274AD. It was a 2 hr. or less install, taking my time trying not to scratch the bumper, it fit perfectly.

Anybody need a plain cross member?

What are you planing on towing with the Class IV?

Good job on install and providing part numbers.

Occasionally I will tow a car, parts car or just load my trailer down with swap meet parts. I don't do as much fun stuff like that as I used to, but I'm ready if I do! My Ramcharger has done the job over the years, but I don't like to trust it too far from home these days.

Nice job. Did you get the bolts torqued back down? I think they call for like 140ft. lbs if I remember correctly. Wouldn't want that thing coming loose while pulling anything.

Thanks guys, I just wanted to document the part numbers so others wouldn't have to guess at it.

Yep, torqued it with a two foot torque multiplier (pipe). I'll go back and check it with a torque wrench.

I might end up having to get one of these for my 2013. Thanks for finding the part number.

My dealer installed the bolt on claiming it was the class IV. After reading this and learning it is a class III I am ticked off at the dealer.

Since I e-mailed him requesting the class IV and a class III was installed I hope he corrects the mix up. I am waiting his return e-mail.

BTW Mojack do you have a web link to confirm that the bolt on is rated at Class 3 and not Class 4?

There have been issues with the factory hitches welds cracking at the frame mounting points. A much better hitch is the Reese or Curt Class V hitches. The Reese tucks in tighter to the bottom of the bumper, and replaces the bumper support, requires lifting the bed off the frame to install. The Curt hangs down a little lower and doesn't require lifting the bed.
