I'd pressure test your coolant system. Don't forget the cap. You could be losing a small amount of coolant every minute as steam getting past the cap or a pinhole leak in a hose that only opens up under pressure.

x2 on the cap. Also pay special attention to the areas surrounding the water pump. The gaskets on the water pumps in these engines are also known to fail.
Also, just because evidence of a H/G leak isnt manifesting itself doesnt mean it isnt there. A pressure test will take you to your problem no matter how big or small.

I'm going to piggy back on this thread rather than start a new one.
I seem to be losing some coolant via the breather tube on my over flow tank. Its a small diameter rubber tube attached to the filler neck on the over flow tank. It drips down the side of the over flow tank and to the ground. Some of the excess seems to collect on the fan shroud and drips down from there. Its not a lot but still seems unusual to me.
The temp gauge is solidly in the normal range and the engine runs perfectly. No over heating smells or other leaks. 172k miles on this 4.7. Its clean as a whistle otherwise.

Thoughts?

I had the same problem with losing coolant and couldn't find where it was going. Turned out that there were some small flaws in the heads got that fixed no more coolant lost. Now if I can just figure out why it wont idle right.
