Default 17" Wheel Questions 2013

Looking to replace the stock 20" wheels with aftermarket 17" rims. I would like to better understand offset and backspacing, but need a starting point. If the OEM wheels are 17x7 with a +1 offset, does that mean the backspace is 4.5"?

Mickey Thompson classic 17X9 5X5.5 4 1/2backspace -12 mm offset.

Or the Pro Comp series 99 wheels.17x8, 5 on 5.5 Bolt Pattern
Backspace = 4.5 in
is the offset +.5"?

I am going to keep the stock tire size 265 70 17 but would like the tires to move out from stock about 1/2" max.

Please help get me on track. Thanks in advance!

For the 9" wide wheel you will want a +12mm offset to get your 1/2" that your are looking for (extending out).

That's not correct. What you're missing is that wheel widths are measured bead to bead but backspace is measured from the lip. The lip is normally 1/2" past the bead so that needs to be added in. Add 0.5" to your 4.5" and you'll come up with the correct 5" BS for that wheel.

Here's another calculator that I like for comparing tire/wheel installations. http://www.rimsntires.com/specs.jsp

That's not true. You can change from 20's to 17's. These trucks are made to work with 17 inch wheels and many come standard with 17's. Going smaller than that you could run into the issue of your brakes not fitting in.

I just posed a thread in the Lifting section where I replaced my stock 20's with a set of 17" aftermarket wheels with a 0 degree offset if you're curious... however I went up to 35" tires... Here's the Link to my thread.
