After seeing picture of castle nut on other guys trucks I had to look at mine again. This time I paid attention. So.. pop off driveshaft again, no pinion nut movement, paint mark in-line. But, the pinion threads have two "keyway" grooves cut in them. After the pinion nut is torqued to spec they knock in the top of the nut into the grooves, stake them in if you will. There's no way (shouldn't be) the nut will come loose. Its torqued, it should be a interference crimp type nut, it should be locktited, and they have staked it at factory. When they institute a change to fix problem, they pulled out all the stops. This is on a 2012 2wd Ram Express 1500, May 2012 build date. If you want to take a peek at yours and you have a castle type nut with no grooves cut in pinion threads for staking top of nut, you might have a problem. This is just my opinion after seeing pictures of other castle type pinion nuts that are in the recall notice. But it all sure makes sense to me. Wrong nut, no grooves.

I received a recall notice for the pinion nut just last week !!
the notice did not seem like the form letter type
it has my VIN# & vehicle description

strange because my Ram was built in October '08 & i have not heard about the early '09s having that issue

when i go in for my next oil change, i will see if they say anything
I have about 84,000 miles on my Ram now & my vacation in July/August will put another 7,600 miles on it
