Default 5.9 engines

Was wondering if there were any differences between 5.9s of the 1980s and the magnum 5.9s of the late 90s and early 2000s? Was told yrs ago that they were different but was just told that they were the same. Anyone know the truth?

remember the older you go the less they worried about emissions the upper 90s magnums was one of the first truck motors to deliver "cleaner" power, and dont forget efi and a carb difference

There are some differences, but nothing magical there. The Magnum make-over served to lend a toe-hold for hyping a new line, as well as standardizing more parts between the 318 and 360. One can easily swap Magnum heads and related parts onto even the first generation LA blocks all the way back to the late 60's. There's a minor difference in external balance weight (Magnum is less) on the 360's. The Magnum heads are the final evolution of the LA heads and evolved directly from the LA swirl port design. The improved emissions had much more to do with Mopar FINALLY catching up with Ford and Chevy in the multi-point fuel injection and computer management systems on their V8's (anyone remember the second half of the 1980's?). Mopar had MPFI on all their turbo stuff, but held off on the V8's to put it all on the Magnum. Since their trucks were the only place they had V8's, the tightening emissions rules (less strict for trucks at that point) and timeline worked in their favor. Revising the LA bought the over a decade during which they could then develop new, or should I say, revise other old designs. The 4.7 head looks a lot like the mid60's Poly, and the Gen 3 Hemi, not so different from previous gens, aside from the obvious. "What was old, is new again."
