Default 2012 Idling High RPM

Sometimes when I start my truck, the RPS go up to 1800-2000, and when I shift into gear, it jolts the truck. It doesn't happen all the time, just sometimes. Is this a problem?

Same here, cold start RPM's are around 1800, then fall to 1500, then 800 then 600 then 500 when driving and stopped, does this over a minute. Always has, I am guessing always will.

Yup, exactly what Asur said. The trucks do that to help warm up the engine and fluids which will make it run better and is easier on the engine. It's never a bad idea to let your truck warm up for a couple minutes on a cold start.

Okay, it may still be okay, but I'm in VA and it's been in the 70's here for the past two weeks, and I didn't see it start doing this until over the last two weeks randomly. May not be a problem, but wanted to be sure.

I think you're going to be ok deerhunter. With 14500 miles on my Hemi, even at 85*F outside, leaving work for home, been sittin 8 hours, my baby still idles after startup at 1800-2K for about 30 seconds and starts to drop to 800, 600, 500, no wait 600. I have come to the same conclusion that this Hemi program is constantly searching to get to its optimum operating temps while still trying to provide us drivers the get in, start, and immediately place it in "D" an go. I guess I'm still old school and let my baby warmup idle til she comes down, then I know my Hemi's happy.

Yup. Same here. mine usually is around 1200 - 1300 for half a minute, then idles down nicely. Has done this from day one regardless of temp.

I'm sure it has to do with the F.I. system. Engine starts up cold the O2 sensors are not heated up yet, the ECU keeps idle RPM up so engine doesn't load up as more fuel is being used on cold start engine. It doesn't take long as ECU trims fuel back and O2 sensors start giving more feedback to ECU for fuel curve. Before long ECU goes into closed loop with all sensors in play and idle goes down. Much more complicated, this is short version.
