Exclamation 1988 Dodge D-100 TBI 318 idle problem

when i go out in the morning to start to truck its has a very rapid idle for a few seconds then it returns to normal. even when its warmed up if i hold it at about two grand it will just loop and not keep a consistent idle. and if you from neutral to drive to quickly the idle is too high and it jams it into gear. i have no idea what could be causing this. if you have any ideas please let me know.

Having a similar issue. Since everything else is in relatively good shape, I'm pondering the need for a throttle body overhaul. Even though they're essentially dry as compared to a carburetor, those gaskets don't last forever. A couple things I have noticed are that goosing the throttle pretty well (just a quick stab, at least half way) will sometimes get the rpm's to drop. Another thing that works sometimes is to simply hold the brake. There's a brake light sensor in the computer (can you believe that?), and it tells the computer to idle down (handy for sitting at a redlight). Anyway, I've noticed the problem seems to be worse on a cold engine. Matter of fact, on mine, the idle in gear (when cold) is so bad it sounds like it has a Mutha Thumpa cam in it. This tells me there's some sort of leak going on. You may also notice some richness in the exhaust fumes .The idle smooths out once warm, but it will tend to hunt around. Anyway, the throttle body is my prime suspect at present.

Couple things. A recent O2 sensor change did help. It was due anyway. What a pain to change that thing. Also, a can of Seafoam has reduced my Mutha Thumpa-style cold idle to barely a a brief stutter. I think the hunting idle is due more to what must be an incredibly slack timing chain. As stated, I think the rest is due to a tired throttle body.

the quick stab at the throttle to get the rpms to go down just simply de-activates the programmed choke (teacher taught me that in autoclass )
