Default Oh No, Another Trinity Question

I have had the Trinity for about a month now, yes its great, yes it has a lot of features, yes I can notice the performance gain and its not psychological because i spent over $500 on it.

Here is my question for you: Does anyone monitor the knock sensor and misfire sensor? I know I read somewhere about a few of you that did buy I cant find what I really looking for. In the cold weather I average somewhere 26-38 misfires, no check engine light or anything and I don't hear an audible knock. Is this normal? I put it in the 87, 91, 93 and stock modified tunes and all yielded about the same amount of misfires. The real difference is I get more when its really cold out and most of them happen on start up.

I do realize misfires will happen but is this cause by the tune or is this normal. Also I know some guys talked about having a bad knock with the 93 tune and 93 octane gas so they switched to 91 tune. Is this an audible knock or the knock sensor your referring to.

Im second guessing my purchase now since to really feel the performance in my 2500 I have to run premium gas and the prices suck as much as the truck sucks gas. Plus I hear the Bully Dog has better can tunes, which is all I'm after.

I monitor LT/ST kr and timing but I didn't know about cyc misfire. All tunes seem to knock on this winter gas so I'm running the 87 oct tune and 93 prem fuel. This combo keeps me at ST 4 kr and no LT.

Whats ST/LT?

I have the 1v Knock sensor and misfires happen then the thing gets pegged, so I'm assuming its related.

My ST/LT knock never moves from 0 on my 93 tune and 93 gas

Default Misfiring and knocking

My neighbor had the same problem with his 2011 ram also. It happened off and on for about a week for him. He took it in to the dealer and they fixed right away. Try and reset your tune and if that doesn't work take it in.

I had this problem to but mine was with high ST retard knock, so I got the custom tune from hemifever and that fixed it. And his tune is way better than any canned tunes.

Short Term/Long Term Knock Retard are PID's on your tuner you should be monitoring closely. It is how much the PCM is retarding the timing (in degrees) in an attempt to counter spark knock that is occurring. This is VERY bad for your engine! ST KR's are how much timing is being pulled immediately, and LT KR's are how much timing is being pulled preemptively based on PCM's memory of ST KR's. Ideally, you would have no ST/LT retard at all, but ST KR's of a few degrees (2-3) @ WOT is often considered acceptable. You should NEVER have LT KR though, as this is hurting performance, and is an indicator that you have excessive spark knock occurring which could damage your engine.

I have been monitoring the ST/LT as of lately and they don't move from zero. I still get the misfires count. Sounds like I should be ok from what you just wrote.

Its been a while. So I did some experimenting and had a tankt full of 93 octane and had a thought of selling the tunner. I put it back to stock tune and monitored the st/lt while driving on a stock factory tune. Guess what there was and lt and st count on the stock tune using 93 octane tune. So does that mean stock the ram tries to advance the timing for max power and the tunner doesnt do anything or does the tunner just force a more advance tuning all the time vs. stock without extreme loads. Im lost.

Its highly possible your stock tune is inferior to the DS tune in terms of timing advance curves. I'm not a DS tech, but I would imagine the stock tune is more sensitive to detonation than aftermarket tunes, and unnecessarily pulls timing for safety's sake. You have to remember, the same tune is written into thousands of pcm's going into trucks with inherently different mechanical characteristics and will be used in very abstract manners. Chrysler realizes this along with the fact that they have a lengthy powertrain warranty, so I'm sure the tune is written well to the conservative side. I would imagine most guys would see ST/LT KR#'s on a stock tune when driving the vehicle in a moderate/aggressive manner, they just don't have a means to actually see this (no tuner). Conversely, most guys with tuners run the performance tunes and never see it either.
In summation, if you are running a performance tune and are not seeing ST KR #'S over 3-4 w/ 0 LT KR #'s, then you are getting optimal performance from your engine, and are doing so safely. It's only when you get the higher KR #'s, and especially if you hear any audible "pinging", that you should be really concerned.
