Default Transmission Maint.

We have a 010 1500 Ram with 47,000 miles on it Everything is good, I think, but when should I service the tranny? And what needs done? Just change the filter, and fluids, or something about flushing it. Thanks Doug

According to the owners manual it says to change the fluid and filter at 60k depending on what your truck is used for. I follow the schedule and dropped my tranny pan and replaced the two filters at roughly 55K miles.

That doesn't get all of the fluid but it got a fair amount. My truck like yours was running just fine. I just chose to do it for peace of mind since I have 0 power train warranty and I have the means to do it myself.

Most will tell you it isn't required that early. If you pull your transmission stick and it is nice and pink you are probably okay. I personally just wanted to get it done.\

Currently at 67k miles- 0 issues.

A wise man once told me to never service the trans if you arent having any problems. I disregarded his advice with my last truck and 2 days after i had the trans serviced my solenoid pack went out.

On a related note, what transmission fluid to use? I've been using Mobil-1 synthetic in my GM and Ford products but I can't seem to find a synthetic that is MOPAR approved....

the book calls for ATF 4
it is backwards compatible, meaning if your owners manual reads ATF 3
the ATF 4 is compatible

Chrysler's thinking

Type 9602/ATF+4 fluids was that it would have the same frictional characteristics as ATF+3. The paper explicitly states that this was because new clutch materials would not be introduced for this fluid and it had to be backwards compatible with ATF+3. Graphs in the paper show that the friction coefficient of fresh ATF+3 and ATF+4 is essentially identical, but as the fluid ages ATF+4 retains the “as new” coefficient while ATF+3 degrades.

The paper noted that one alternative was to use synthetic Group IV base stock, which are even more expensive than the ATF+4 solution, which provided Group IV style performance from Group III stock. ATF+4 meets strict low-temperature, oxidation, and volatility performance requirements and relatively low cost

Manufacturers can make ATF+4 fluids, but to use the trademarked ATF+4 name in their compatibility list, they must have their fluids tested and licensed by Chrysler engineers, and must use Lubrizol in their formulations. Licensed fluids are periodically sampled from stores to assure quality

Amsoil is Chrysler approved. Just order it through the link in my signature. You will be looking for the Signature Series Multi-Vehicle Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid

And what does your operators manual tell you to do (???)
If you plan on doing it yourself..... only use ATF-4
Pay VERY close attention when doing the filters.!

I think you may be mistaken. The list of "approved" (licensed) ATF+4® fluids is at this link:

http://www.centerforqa.com/licensedatf4brands.html

and Amsoil does not appear on the list. Amsoil fluid is not ATF+4®.

Proven in 100,000-mile, Severe-Service Taxi Fleet Field Trial
To demonstrate its effectiveness in severe service, Signature Series Multi-Vehicle Synthetic ATF was installed in vehicles owned by a Las Vegas cab company. The vehicles routinely encountered demanding stop-and-go driving loaded with passengers and cargo, while the desert environment presented extremely hot ambient temperatures, placing enormous strain on the fluid. Following 100,000 miles, a transmission was selected for analysis. The Aluminum Beaker Oxidation Test (ABOT) is one industry-accepted method used to determine a transmission fluid's oxidation resistance, which is a good indicator of its service life. Testing by an independent, third-party lab reveals that after 100,000 miles in severe service, Signature Series Multi-Vehicle Synthetic ATF resisted oxidation longer than required for new fluid to meet the Chrysler ATF+4 specification (see graph). Internal components, including the valve body and clutch plates (pictured), were virtually free of damaging sludge, deposits and wear, confirming the lubricant’s high level of protection for severe-service applications.
