Default CTD Towing

So this is post could be in a number of areas, I'm putting it here because this area rarely gets much love. I'm also looking for CTD owners, not so much Hemi's.

So I have two parts to my question. Towing over 10,000 lbs, what kind of mileage do you see? So far, I've pulled a large bass boat (The day I sold it) which was jaw dropping shocking. The tong weight alone changes the ride to a degree I wasn't expecting. I've heard people say it felt like nothing was there, but this actually felt like nothing was there. MPG didn't change, still getting around 18.

I pulled an empty cargo trailer, rather large tandem box, flat nosed. Pulled easy, but honestly I was surprised at the feeling of wind resistance, I didn't think it would be as noticeable with the 2500. It dropped my MPG down to 14-15 unloaded. Kind of shocked me.

Third was around 10,000 lbs of crusher run, though not very far. The truck did pretty good. It was a bear to stop, but it was mostly city driving.

What is everyone else seeing while towing? Hows the sway with the 2500's?

I have a 30' travel trailer and get around 11 MPG towing it. But, But I always use my exhaust break every time I drive it so towing the trailer I don't have any issues stopping and am ready to put breaks on now at 60,000 miles. going with the stock Mopar breaks I'm not inventing the wheel if it ain't broke don't fix it thought. and I also down shift when towing.

I love the exhaust brake on these trucks. I'm also big into down shifting. I'm thinking whatever camper I wind up with I'm going to change over to hydraulic disk brakes.

It's really cheap, most people are saying 1300 installed. I'm betting you could do it yourself really cheap.

This guy had a pretty good video. From what I've read, it cuts the stopping distance down by half with a 10k+ fifth wheel. My plan is to have them through in the install when I buy.

I have the 2500 CTD (2013) with 3.42 rear axle. No sway. The only thing I've pulled is my 20 foot, tandem axle horse trailer (bumper pull). I'm guessing it weighs 3500 lbs. Pulled it loaded with furniture the other day, and I could actually tell something was back there. I think it had to do with wind resistence, however. Towed great. Dropped MPG from 17-18 to about 14. I've only got 1300 miles on here. I love the exhaust brake as well-use it all the time. Hardly used the brakes pulling the small trailer.

I think folks that say "they don't know it's back there" really either have not towed much, or it's just a way of saying it wasn't much for the truck. Not knowing something is back there is perhaps like towing a very small lawnmower trailer with the CTD. But, for the most part, you should really know something is hooked up-the truck handles differently with bumps, might be a tad slower on take-off, and the braking is slightly different.

Then again, I'm very careful and observant when I tow. I notice everything!

Hope to buy a 5th wheel soon, if I can ever find someone that carries what I need. Hard to find anything just now (hidden rails, anyways).

I have not had the opportunity to pull anything yet with the new truck but the previous trucks , the mileage varied with weight AND Aerodynamics, lots of weight and a slippery aerodynamic shape will get similar mileage as a light weight and trying to pull a "barndoor" aerodynamically.

a SRW will always have more sway than a dually with heavy weight but it is manageable until you are getting into the weight range that the dually is necessary. now that I have had a couple with the exhaust brake, I will NOT go back to one without! I actually was MISSING the EB when I was driving the Jetta TDI!

I just towed my 28 foot Dutchmen bumper pull for the first time 7,640 lbs back from the rv shop. Only 35 miles. I could tell she was back there but compared to my 09 1500 Ram the difference was like night & day. The ride was smoother & quieter & love the eb when in Tow Haul mode. Best move i made changing to a 3500 Cummins....

There is no comparison between towing with a gas burner and a diesel as far as torque is concerned. Yes a hemi will pull the load, but it will always be in the mid-range to upper rpm's to get the job done. The Diesel will be running at a much lower part of the powerband and will be working without hanging it's guts out. As far as side sway, that's a chassis and suspension issue, motor has no affect there.

I have a 2012 CTD with a G-56 manual and 3.73 rear end 5" lift and a 24' enclosed sled trailer. Had it pulling 3 quads and camping supplies. It's a V-nose and I used to pull it with an '05 Duramax.

Off the bat I noticed the Ram can pull the trailer much faster than the Duramax could. It would top out at 65-70 MPH and it would run out of steam. The Cummins would go upwards of 80, didn't really have the balls to push it further than that on a new truck.

The cummins is getting 11.2MPG loaded like that, with a 5" lift and 35" tires.

Props to Dodge for offering the manual as well, I love the added control I get while towing with the stick, the exhaust brake works really well in the manual, Id say better than in my buddies LongHorn 3500.
