My 2013 Laramie with the 8 speed has been built and is being shipped. I selected the standard gear ratio of 3:55, but it appears it will be delivered with the 3:21 ratio. I don't often pull heavy loads so I didn't select the optional 3:92 gears. Now it looks like I will be limited to lighter trailer loads.

That 10k number i believe includes the fine print as well of something about having weight distribution equipment.

I am glad I don't have to install airbags the truck came with them

I would think that most people don't get random phone calls and end up towing over say 6K. I bet most people who tow any kind of weight are setup to do it right............I would hope so anyway.

The above is a general rule of thumb as every truck configuration can be slightly different depending on options
And yet uni-body 2014 Grand Cherokee HEMI with an 8 speed and 3.09 ratio can tow 7,400 lbs.

How is it possible that a body on frame truck with a more agressive gear ratio (3.21) has a lower tow rating than a Grand Cherokee?

That's messed up. Maybe it has to do with vehicle weight?

Tow ratings are not based solely on differential gearing and engine power. They are based on the entire vehicle's overall abilities. This goes for brakes, engine cooling, engine power, transmission cooling etc...... The gear ratio could be 2.0 and if ring gear was 5 inch thick and two feet across, it could move way more than 10000 lbs. It is just a ratio. What's far more interesting is duty cycle. How often or frequently can it actually haul that 10,000 lbs? Most half-tons are considered light duty (light duty cycle). Modern 1 tons are getting closer and closer to what was once considered medium duty. They will pull 10,000 lbs. day in and day out, while a half-ton should really only do it once a months.
