Default Planning on my first Ram Diesel Truck

Hey all:

I've driven a 4X4 2002 Dodge Durango for the last 11 years. It's got 110K on it and the engine is perfect. The trans still sounds OK but there's a little growl in reverse (not major). The only real problems I've had out of warranty are a failed radiator and a failed rear end.

It's a great truck and I don't think I'll sell it ever. When I was in my early early 20s I had a stripped out K series Blazer. It was the best truck besides the Durango I've ever owned. I must say though having passed 50 I'm glad to have power windows, AC, good sound, automatic, and modern transfer case.

I was driving my wife's dually (it's a 2009 diesel) up to northern California last month and got bitten by the bug. Our previous diesel was a 2001. She sold it in 2009 (no jive it had 15K on the odometer) and wouldn't let me buy it from her for the trade in value.

However, I'm about to retire and I've heard good things about the new 2014s. What's the picture in the 3/4 ton (2500). Anyone have one? What are the options and what should a guy consider? I want to drive the USA and pick up some wood for my woodshop (beams and reclaimed hardwood). I'll probably be hauling timber on a 18' trailer. What's that sound like in a truck?

I'm excited about joining this forum so please let me know what's the latest skinny on the new diesel trucks from Dodge? I'd like to stay with Cummins but that may be the only manufacturer Dodge uses. I'm a little confused whether Eco-Diesel is a Cummins product.

Personally I worked with my hands for most of my adult life. I've been a tradesman, a baker, and a professional horse trainer. About 15 years ago I went to college and earned a degree from the UC system (e.g., UCLA, Davis, Berkely etc.). Now I'm retiring. My hobbies are centered on being Self Sufficient although I'm in the middle of the LA basin. I like ranching, Machining, rifles, and Woodwork. I've owned both passenger vehicles and trucks with the Durango being the best I've owned so far.

Please let me know your opinion and give me some info on who the senior contributors are on the forum. Especially those who work on their own vehicles.

Thanks to you,

Jon

I believe the 2014 1500 Rams will be offered with the Eco Diesel , not the HD Rams. It's a proven VM Diesel V6 made in Italy. Almost 300 hp which is probably a lot more than your wife's old Cummins had. 30 mpg in a 1500 Ram sounds pretty good to me ! Think you should look at a 1500 for what you are going to tow. I tow a 10,000 lb 32' fifth wheel with my 05 hemi half ton, no problem. You might even find a new Jeep GC with the new Eco diesel to drive, just to check out the power and smoothness.

Welcome to the RamforumZ

Being as you want to pull a trailer full of beams & timber,
the new Ram 2500 with Leaf springs & Cummings diesel with the 3.73 rear end would do it easily. The 2014 2500 Ram may have the 8 speed hopefully, the 8 speed would give you about 6% better gas mileage

the 2014 Ram 1500 is coming out with a 3.0 turbo diesel from VM & they say it gets darn good mileage, but no one knows about it when towing, as yet

Good luck on your choice

an '09 Cummins has 350hp/650tq. I too would like a 1500 for a DD but I will keep my CUMMINS for hauling/towing!
