Nope. It just augments the existing cable. Easy mod and worth the money.

The best deal I found was the one I bought from Newegg for $29.60 shipped to the door.

The only issue I had was the washer under the cable connector was thinner than the one that came from the factory. This resulted in the metal part of the cable rubbing on the side of the box. I looked at reusing the factory washer but it wasn't going to easily separate from the factory bolt. I ended up putting another thin washer against the bed and the supplied washer to act as a ship and everything works now.

While I was installing my Tailgate Assist I had an issue with the nutcert. Called Dee Zee and the lady on the phone was really helpful. Within a matter of literally two minutes I had new nutcert on the way. Parts arrived two days later and not only did they send a replacement nutcert but also all the other misc parts that are included with a new shock. If only all customer service departments were this good.

I found the hardest part of this was taking the washer off of the bolt, so I could take the limiter off!!

The nutsert was a bit of a pain in the butt, but once you figure that out it's smooth sailing.

For those of you that are having a hard time with the nutsert do this.

Measure your 3/4" on the nutsert and with a bright colour (paint, liquid paper) mark a small line onto the nut itself.

Insert the device into the hole and use your allen key to hold the screw part still. With your wrench, turn the nut clockwise no more than 9 turns of the white paint that you see on the nut.

When you have finished your 9 turns, then use your wrench to turn the nut counterclockwise until it becomes lose. Then use the allen key on the screw to take the device the rest of the way out.

I have to admit it took me a few seconds to get my head around how it worked, but once I figured it out it was simple.

After having the tail gate assist on the truck for about a month I noticed its rubbing the paint off on the tailgate when closing. The top part of the shock rubbed a line in the paint down to the primer. Now I have to try to find some touch up paint and ditch the shock.

I can't say that I have noticed any paint problems with mine yet. I will admit there is a bit of a catch when I first open the gate, but it hasn't seemed to cause any problems so far?

I couldn't use the washer they supplied. The cable would rub the DZ when closed. It made it stick a little when I went to open the tailgate. Took off the washer and put on a thinner shim I had in the garage. Works perfect now.

Had mine for over a year, no issues, no rubbing, no problems, love this product, saved the tailgate drop more than once.

So 7 days ago I called Dee Zee to inform them of the misfit Lift assist on my Ram. They indicated they would be sending me the Ford kit. Since, I have ordered and received a Bakflip from California and a Bed Rug from Missouri and BOTH have already arrived to me in Minnesota, in 3-4 days.
In 7 days I have yet to receive the Dee Zee, Dee Zee is in Des Moines, 4 hours from me.
If I were Dee Zee and I had this type of problem I think I would have at least express shipped the replacement. At this point I am just hoping I get something, anything, someday.
Really happy they admit they have a problem, NOT happy I have a scratched truck and NO replacement product yet. I talked to a guy not the supposed "Good" customer service rep others have reported.
