Default 1st Roadie in the Ram

I finally had a chance to go on an extended trip with the truck (Hemi/CC/6'4/8spd/3.92) this weekend. I drove from the Metro-Detroit area to Watkins Glen, NY and I went the Canadian route. The group was my 7yo daughter, my mom, and myself. The bed was empty except for 3 small carry-on size suit cases.

MPG
Total mileage was 994 miles, using 56.42 gallons of gas (87 & 89 octane, alternating fill-ups). The total mileage on the truck is 1,984 miles so I'm still breaking it in. Approximately 630 of the miles were highway through MI, ON, and NY. I kept the speed around 65mph (Canadian speed limit is 62mph) on the highways. Once off the highway in NY in the Finger Lakes region it gets really hilly really fast. I maintained the speed limit where I could but didn't see any sense in trying to get the truck to maintain 55mph on some of the steeper grades. I hit an overall MPG of 17.62 for the 992 miles. Here's a tank by tank breakdown-

1st tank - 331.3 miles / 20.15 gallons / 19.4mpg - 270 hi-way / 60 city & rural (AC on sparingly, less than 15% of time)
2nd tank - 396.4 miles / 23.66 gallons / 16.75mpg - 100 hi-way / 290 city & rural (AC not used, windows down and loving it)
3rd tank - 271.6 miles / 15.95 gallons / 17.02MPG - 260 hi-way / 11 city & rural (AC on 80% of time and a head wind for most of this tank).

While I won't say that the EVIC is useless when it comes to MPG it tended to be fairly inaccurate. It ranged from being off by 0.3mpg high to 1.35mpg low with the average difference being 0.81mpg low. Maybe I'm expecting too much from the computer.

General
I love driving this truck and I'm looking forward to taking it when I go to the UP later this summer. The Alpine system was great even with the windows down. The headlights (low) are a bit weak but the brights seemed manageable. I had been contemplating some aftermarket projector lamps with HID and after this trip they will become a reality later this summer. No issues with the 8.4 although I did notice that the Sirius/XM cutout in the hills (not surprised) and a couple of times when I was in Canada (surprised as my 2011 Journey has been in Canada more than a dozen times and it's never cutout there). I also liked having the ability to downshift the trans right on the steering wheel. A fair number of the downhills that I hit this weekend gave me a choice - burn up the brakes or use the engine RPM and brakes to slow things down.

MDS
This was the 1st time that I was able to notice it. I've read on here that when the ECO light comes on it means that the MDS is running but I've never been able to notice it before. I will say that I don't think the 2 are linked together. I had the ECO light showing on multiple occasions and I could tell that I was running all 8 cylinders. The MDS has a distinct kick when it turns on, almost like the truck hit a small bump in the road. The engine also sounded different. I'm not sure that it really makes that much of a difference as it didn't kick in that often on either hi-way leg of the trip.

All in all it was a great trip with the family (minus the wife who had to work but I bought her a bunch of wine to make up for it) with a great truck.

Nice info.....also i agree about the ECO light not being linked....i have the ECO light on my v6 Jeep wrangler it comes on when i shift "in the green" or let off the gass...just indicates my driving is getting optimal fuel efficiency... and my jeep definitely doesnt have MDS lol.

The finger lakes have some really great wine. I'm fortune enough to live within an hour of the 2 largest of the finger lakes where a large portion of the wineries are. Most the liquor and wine stores in my area sell a big selection of finger lake wines, so I don't have to drive far when my lady is craving some good wine. If only there were as many local breweries I'd be happy.

A note about the evic mpg... As far as I can tell it dosen't average the mpg from when it's reset. It averages either over a set time of mileage. I just did my first road trip too (have a thread about it) and the evic said my trip average was the same as the average for the life of my truck. Even though it should have been drastically different. tl;dr=evic average mpg is not accurate.

It depends on which of the 3 places you get your average from & if you've reset it. There's the fuel economy gauge that displays average MPA. It's the one that is used for the corner gauge average. If you reset the fuel economy gauge, the corner gauges will also reset. There are also 2 trip meters with their own MPA averages that are independent of the rest.

I should have been a little more specific when I was talking about the MPG. I was referring to the trip A or trip B MPG reading. The trip meter was reset every time I filled up on this trip so my MPG readings on the EVIC were for a tank by tank basis rather than an accumulative average. I've never really paid a whole lot of attention to the EVIC in my Journey but I will over the next few fill-ups and see how accurate it is.

Agreed. Considering that a large portion was anything but flat I liked what I saw.

I thought so too, but it seems it's not entirely true.

I had trip A set for the whole life of my truck before it started a big road trip. 2500 miles averaging 16.5mpg.

Reset trip B at the start of the road trip. Went 1900 miles averaging 19.0mpg.

So trip A was never reset. Meaning it now was a combination of before and after the road trip. Theoretically it should have been 4400 miles averaging maybe 18mpg.

But no, it was 4400 miles averaging 19.0mpg. The same as the road trip. After a while of driving both trip A and B were exactly the same. Any time one would go up or down a 1/10th,the other would too. Even though one had 2000 more miles it was ssupposedly averaging, which should make the average economy change much slower than a trip over less miles.

After a while, both trips a and b, along with the cluster average and change average at the same time, regardless of when they were reset.

This is probably a dumb question but my outdoorsman is getting ready to roll over 3k miles and I've never noticed a eco light. Is this something I have to activate?
