Engine Position System Performance

What does this mean?

OBD Code P0008refers to
Engine Positions System Performance Bank 1 is the generic definition for the P0008; however your vehicle's manufacturer may have a different definition for the P0008 code.
Symptoms

Possible sumptoms of OBD code P0008
- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
Causes

Possible causes of OBD code P0008
This error basically means the engine is out of Sync. Stop using the vehicle without delay! The Camshaft and Crankshaft are out of position or at the very least think they are. Engine timing may be out and thus your engine is in danger of complete destruction. At the very least a camshaft sensor maybe down.

I find it very hard to believe that no one has shared what P0008 code is. I've read numerous pages with the same explanation that makes no sense. The engine isn't going to self destruct. Thing I have experienced is- the oil change light came on 3 days later the P0008 code and the little engine light came on, the cruise control stopped working and the ECO stopped working and gas mileage dropped. I've changed the oil tot he specified 5w 20, going to change plugs soon. If you know what is causing this code share it.

Changed plugs and cleaned throttle body today, cranked engine afterwards, ran rough for a few minutes and the smoothed out. Checked codes and had P0008 and P0016 with the engine light on. rechecked codes and they were gone but engine light blinks 10 times. Engine runs smooth. Anyone have any ideas what is going on?

The P0008 DTC code is generic, so that means it applies to all makes of vehicles. This source says it best:

The Engine Control Module (ECM) tests for misalignment between both camshafts on one bank of the engine & the crankshaft. The misalignment would be at an idler sprocket for either bank or at the crankshaft. Once the ECM learns the position of both camshafts on one bank of the engine, the ECM compares the learned values to a reference value. The ECM will set a DTC if both learned values for one bank of the engine are exceeding a calibrated threshold in the same direction.

Symptoms of a P0008 DTC may include:
•MIL (Malfunction indicator lamp) illumination
•Roughness while accelerating
•Poor fuel economy
•Decreased power
•Timing chain "noise"

Potential Causes

Potential causes of a P0008 code may include:
•Stretched timing chain
•Crankshaft reluctor wheel has moved and is no longer referenced to top dead center (TDC)
•Timing chain tensioner problem

Possible Solutions

If your vehicle is new enough that it still has powertrain warranty left, by all means let the dealer perform the fix. Generally, diagnosing and fixing this DTC will involve inspecting the timing chains and tensioners for excessive wear or misalignment, and inspecting the crank reluctor wheel for proper positioning. Then replacing parts as required.

General Motors has really had vehicle issues with this code, be glad that you don't own one

After changing oil, plugs, cleaning throttle body, and running sea foam, all codes cleared and vehicle returned to it normal self. My opinion is oil change light on and oil was with dirty for about 1000 miles causing P0008 code and other issues. Have driven the truck for about 1500 miles and is normal. Change the oil and clean throttle body at the same time it'll prevent issues and keep it running correctly for a lomg time.
