Ahh, I remember that feeling well.

Traditionally, chromed wheels are just that, aluminum or steel wheels that have had the chroming process applied directly to the wheel. So in that since they are "fake". Doesn't matter either way, all chrome pits, peels and flakes eventually.

Ok, so here is the reason for the plastic chrome.

REAL chrome wheels are EXTREMELY heavy, especially in 20" sizes. By going with plastic chrome cladding on an aluminum wheel, the wheel and tire weight at each corner went from 100+ lbs, down to around 40lbs.

Think I am kidding? Pick up a chrome wheel and then take off your trucks plastic chrome and pick it up. HUGE difference. This does 2 things, increases speed because your wheel/tire have less rotating mass. ergo, it takes less torque to spin each wheel. It also reduces weight by as much as 60lbs per corner. Thats an overall weight savings of 240lbs. With the 25mpg Average CAFE standard deadline approaching rapidly, every pound shed makes a difference.

THAT is why they use plastic covers. I for one dont mind it. The only "real" chrome anywhere on a Ram Truck will be the bumpers if its equipped. The grille, door handles (inside and out), trim around the gauges, gas cap, side moldings, even the chrome inside the headlights (bezels) is ALL plastic chrome.

Even though I never keep stock wheels, I don't like the idea of a plastic cover on the stock wheels regardless of the reasoning behind it. It's cheesy and cheap.

I understand and agree with what you're saying. I think the problem for most guys has more to do with the way they are "marketed" and sold. The term "chrome-clad" is a little vague and misleading, IMO. I think it should be disclosed to the consumer that the wheels are not actual chrome in the sense that most are accustomed to, either through different terminology or a direct written and/or verbal disclosure. JMO.

The reason it was done was because the dealers couldn't warrantee chromed aluminum rims fast enough here in the salt belt, they fell apart after two years. Nothing cheesy and cheap about them, they last, clean up easily and look great. A friend bought some really nice chromed aluminum wheels for his Jeep, they are maybe three years old and I made him take them off before each winter, but last year we had a early snow storm. I don't even think he drove with them on in that snow and he took them right off, This spring, pitted and look like shit, The plastic ones on my 2009 looked brand new when I traded the truck in two weeks ago, I'll bet the ones on the 2013 will look just as good when it goes back in 39 months (if I can make it that long) I wish I lived in TX and I didn't have to worry about that kinda shit, Especially with this Cuomo gun ban/magazine bullshit, hopefully all the lawsuits will resolve it, but I'm stuck here for a while.

One of the several reasons I kept the 17" from my 2012 and had them put on the 2013.
I think the chrome 20's look cheap tacky and just plain ghetto fabulous.

Your missing the point here, you can't change what the manufacture does with the trucks with that said now you have a reason (excuse) to go buy after market wheels and make your truck look better. Now it will be an easy sell to the (wife, or girl friend) that you need to improve the reliability for the truck / looks with so much money invested already.
Good luck
