Default Update On Leaking 3rd brake light

So I finally get a chance drop off my truck. After they found out where it was leaking from they put some kind of sealant on the light and put a ticket in to replace my headliner. I asked the service manager is the stuff they sealed my light with a sealant that I willnt be able to change my light. They looked at me very puzzled! I am asking you because if that's the case that is real stupid! She told me I have no idea but I will call you tomorrow when I have an answer. Now I know I am no car mechanic but I do work on airplanes. So if you are the boss or whatever don't you need to have a clue what kind of maintenance that is being done or be some what familiar! FML

Very common problem. I have had three Rams over the years. 2003, 2006 and now 2012. 2006 leaked through the top brake light. Seal and forget. I never had to replace those bulbs ever...

snusrak here on the forum wrote a how-to fix the leak yourself without the "bandaid" solution the dealer uses.

What's weird is the leaking brake light is prevalent on all makes of trucks. my 1998 f-150 did it. And I've heard many reports of other trucks, random makes and years that do it. Why they haven't solved the issue? beats me

Mine wasnt leaking, but I took it off and put a good sized bead of silicone around the whole gasket, it's pretty much sealed up fully now.

I changed the bulbs when I did this, but it'll come off if I need it too, it's just silicone, I can rub it off with a finger and re-apply.

You can always just install a new thicker gasket and remove the old one as well, home depot is your friend!

you guys got me nervous! im ulling mine off and using Silicone gasket maker to seal them. I bought LED tails for my previous Nissan and they leaked. they never used any silicone around the lens and plastic surround. I made sure the forum people knew about these aftermarket lights. I always seal them. Now, I guess you have to seal the factory!!!!

thanks for heads up on this.

Chris

Try this approach.

This is what I don't understand. Why haven't they redesigned the 3rd brake light recess. It should be like a "pocket" behind the light, totally divorced from the cabin's interior. With nothing but a foam gasket as a barrier from the elements it's pretty much guaranteed to leak eventually. Think this might be one of those intentional engineering "oops", designed for the majority to fail post-warranty so the dealer can make a quick buck off the unwitting consumer.
