Default Should I trade for this Ram ?

I have a 2012 Ram 2500 Hemi ST Crew Cab. I recently aquired a 28ft Enclosed trailer thats 5000Lb empty and about 10,000 total.

the Hemi seems to have the power (In flat florida) and getting about 6.5-7.5 MPG.

Right now I am about even on the loan. Truck is worth about what I can get for a trade in.

My friend at the dealer call me to say he just got a 2007 SLT Mega Cab in with a 6.7L Cummings. It has 75,000 miles and said I could get it for $22,000

Besides saving me about 8K I figured I would have a much better base on pulling power and MPG....

I guess my question is, how much MPG would I expect to get when towing (I know its hard to say) and what can I do to the diesel to get better MPG out of it.

From the little I know people mention the Sinister EGR block off kit and a tuner. Are these good recommendations and is there something else in addition I should look to do. This truck will be a work/towing mule and not a DD so Im not looking to fancy it up. Any suggestions would be appreciated

I sure wish I could give you some help, but this sort of stuff is beyond me.

My way of dealing with vehicles is to just buy a new one every so many years, just so that I can stay with the curve.

Can I ask if in general it makes sense to trade a 2012 for a 7 year old vehicle? I know that diesel engines last for ever, but what is the rest of the truck like on something that old?

Also given that the 2014's are coming out and there appears to be deals on just about everything now, would it make sense to try and see if you could get a decent price on a new 2500?

Just as suggestion as I really don't know.

Sorry I couldn't help.

Honestly, I appreciate you commenting in general LOL...

I dont know what makes the most sense. I wasnt really looking to trade up cause I didnt want to tack another $10K to my loan.

I did go down and look at the truck today, the body and interior were pretty darn good for a 7yr old truck. Amazing how much bigger the Mega is over the Crew. The diesel was surprisingly nice from a stop and had pretty good pickup. Guess I was expecting worse since they are TQ monsters and have no HP.

They are asking $22,991 for it - http://www.arrigopalmbeach.com/used/...8156031c58.htm

Wow that truck does look pretty nice.

I forgot that you had mentioned that your friend called you about that truck, and if he is a friend and works at a dealer, then I'm sure he can get his crew to give it a good honest once over.

I suppose if you are going to be keeping the truck for a long time to pull that heavy trailer, and you are at even or ahead, then I suppose its a good deal.

How often do you plan on pulling that 28 footer?

The draw back to going to that old of a vehicle is that you don't get all the latest and greatest.......in fact I don't even know what you get aside from a tape deck? LOL......

I would think that if you don't pull that trailer all that often, that perhaps a rental for the few times you need it would make more sense?

I just did a quick search for some 2500's in Florida, and I came up with this one?

http://www.automobilemag.com/5_60_23...e_florida.html

I don't know if it's close to you, or something that you would be interested in, but I think I would shop around first.

Good luck.

The torque is what gets you moving diesel trucks haven't been slow since the mid 90s.

My advice is if the 07 fits your needs better then the 12 and you like it and it doesn't bother you going older then buy it I don't think that's a bad price but I live in central Texas where people think a diesel engine is made of pure diamonds. Good luck

Remembering the adage that you get what you pay for will take you a long way in heeding my advice. Get them to knock $5k off the price and then you will have a good deal. With that said, the value of the truck is only what buyer is willing to pay. Is it worth $22k to you? Then it's a good deal... for you. The truck is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. I understand that the dealer is in the business of making money, but dealerships make a ton of money on used cars from folks that don't know any better. Do your research, then go in educated and be willing to walk if you can't come to an agreement. If they know you will walk, their price will go down. Good luck and let us know how you do.

God I hop you bought that truck. that is a great deal. 07 with only 75k miles is a great price. Buy it and you will not be disappointed especially if you are towing not to mention you will get 20mpg normally just driving.
