Ok, heres another update.

It ran jam up after replacing the ballast, icm and cap and rotor, no surging, no sputtering.

My dad went to the dump today and it started doing the same thing when he hit a hill, sputtering, losing power, and eventually dying... So he asked someone at autozone for their opinion, and they mentioned fuel lines. I had assumed that the guy that helped my dad get this truck running originally had thought to replace the fuel lines all over, but alas, he didn't..

So my dad replaced the lines from the tank to the electric pump, and the return line in the same place, all of which were so degraded, you could pinch them closed almost by looking at them.

I had hoped that would help/potentially fix the problem, but it didn't...

So I'm trying to think of what else it could be that would cause the surging and dying only when pulling hills...

Experience, schooling and logic tells me its a fuel delivery issue, but is it the mechanical fuel pump? Or is it the carburetor? IE sticky float, clogged jet?

I need to figure this out as it is his work truck.

did someone use rubber line everywhere? should only use rubber line to connect the 2 steel lines.

Mech fuel pump would not be affected by a hill. Carb first. Just because you put a rebuild on it doesn't mean it's working properly. Failing that, consider a decayed fuel pickup and/or pickup screen in the fuel tank. Does it cut out the same on a 3/4 full tank as it does on a 1/4 tank when on a hill?

My wife suggested the same thing, and my dad said it still did it with a full tank yesterday morning.

My dad is supposed to hit up the pick a part to look for carbs and a harmonic balancer... but its 110 today...so not sure he'll get out of the house..
