Default Big block into 2nd gen

Toying with the idea of a big block rather than a high HP small block , 400+hp 500 ft lbs out of a 9.1 cr 440 based engine should be easy , a small block will require a good EFI & ignition system anyway as the stock system won't keep up. anyone done this swap ? This is all in the thinking stages , we will be pulling a 30ft RV all over the place , the 5.2 does it but in the long run were going to need more power.

The only thing I'm concerned about is retaining all the dashboard functions, anybody ?

These guys specialize in early Dakota swaps, including 440's. Might wanna give them a call.

Emissions checks? That's a whole other ballgame. If the OBDII functions are not an issue, you can rework things to a more analog nature, gauges included. Transmission choices? 3-speed 727 Torqueflite for big block, or 727 for smallblock with an adapter plate, or even the A518/46RH with that same adapter plate. The stronger setup would probably be the big block 727 with a Gear Vendors overdrive unit. Either way, a solid towing setup will run some serious green. Will need a shifter cable. You'd come out MUCH easier looking for a well-maintained 1993 or earlier truck and doing the conversion on that, but that's your call. Just know your truck is likely to be sidelined for a while. Unplanned problems, custom pieces, all that. For all you're planning to do, you're in about what it'd cost to just supercharge your smallblock.

Not concerned with emissions, the idea is to run on regular pump gas and still pull 400+ ft lbs torque ,BB 727 w/od , a dana 60 or ford 9". I've put 500ci Cadi's in Trucks , RV's and Hot Rod's , just never done anything newer than 1980, still more cost effective than a new truck and the payments that come with it and don't want Diesel.Thank You for the links

I hear ya. On the 440, I'd run 9:1 if running '67 closed chamber heads, otherwise more like 8.5:1 with the open chamber style. I get the feeling gas is gonna continue to suck, maybe even slide some in quality. Anyway, keeping the CR very conservative means more ignition advance and sooner, and that means more usable power "under the curve" and no knocking when lugging a load. And it's a lot easier to roll back the advance a little as opposed to adjusting CR later. Focus on cams that maximize midrange power. Anyway, just my 2 cents. Good luck. It'll be a rare bird.
