PS: are you still running the original tires, or do you have LT tires?

Air suspension worked fine and didn't go into the protection mode. I have the 6 speed and the standard axle, 3.55 I think. I have the OEM standard load tires (114 load rating). I'm not sure if any of the 1500s come with a 121 or E rated tire.

I would consider 1000 lb a normal, practical occasional load for a 1/2 ton. Yes that might put me over the GVWR but mechanically I'm not concerned about stressing components. Some people keep going to hyperbole and scare mongering. I certainly wouldn't load it up with a full pallet of pavers as some imply. That could be 2500 lbs or more and is HD truck territory not a reasonable load for a 1/2 ton no matter what the brand.

Interesting thing with the air suspension is that we won't get the visual indications of extreme overload like the truck sitting on its heals or on its overload bumpers. That was how we used to judge the load before, we would look to see if the rear axle was on its overload leaf. That was about 35 or 40 timothy hay bales on a 1969 Ford F250 Camper special. That was a very cool truck and I miss it, it finally rusted away into nothing but it never broke.

Hopefully the overload protection mode serves as well. I admit to having visions of air bags exploding like balloons, but then I don't plan on putting a full pallet of pavers in the back or 40 timothy hay bales.

It does have to carry a Harley Davidson occasionally...hmm maybe I should upgrade to a 2500.

Thanks for the test results. It's good to know that it doesn't go into protection mode easily.

Wonder what the Harley weighs?!! Thanks again for sharing!

My simple question of what the 2013 Ram truck weighs (and how much weight it supposedly lost over the 2012 model) turned into 6 pages of discussion on payload. hmmm
