I have stuff going on, plans, vacation time, money on the line etc. that are all very much affected by just exactly when I'm going to get my truck. And nobody I have access to within Ram can tell me.

I'd be fine with either scenario, if I could have a little bit of confidence. Trying to plan my life for the next couple of months is pretty much impossible the way it is now though.

Well said, and you're not alone...but whether its for a personal toy, or the heart of ones business...it shouldnt be this way.....suppose you ordered 200 trucks...or a 1000 for your corporate fleet....you mean you would put up with the "I DUNNO" answer from the dealer, or DODGE????

Doesn't sound to me like any of the Dealership or Corporate BS has changed since 1985, with regard to a "ordered" vehicle.

I paid a deposit and "ordered" a top of the line 1985 Dodge window/passenger van in Dec 1984.......same old song and dance for 6 months 'til it arrived at the dealership May 1985. Got all kinds of stories as to what was holding it up. Last story was, Dodge fell behind on CAFE mpg numbers so no trucks were leaving the factory with 360 CID motors until CAFE mpg numbers came back up.

Thats exactly why I posted something to the effect that nothing has changed from the "old days"......and it also explains why so many people pay top dollar buying one off the lot instead of ordering one...wonder what the breakdown would be from one mfg to the next...

I "ordered" a '78 Chevy RCSB.......it took 6 weeks to the day. Back in the 80's to mid 90's, I ordered a dozen Chevy/GMC p/u's at a time (commercial fleet)......usual delivery was 4 weeks.

This is all great stuff...brings me back ... waaaay back...but you gotta admit, it kinda depended on WHEN during the model year things were ordered...way in advance, as soon as the order book was open, or during the year, when things were going full blast, and UAW workers were overpaid and underworked...j/k j/k......

Yep, back in the day, the usual prime time to order was September thru April. IIRC, fleet managers got their "new model year" books from the manufacturers mid summer.

Whilst I don't have any car manufacturing experience, I do have about 26 years of working with manufacturers in my line of work.

If you are dealing with a company that only makes 1 off's of everything, then yes they should be able to give you a pretty dead accurate date baring any unforeseen breakdowns or manufacturing errors or shortages of parts.

The same would go if you were buying the 100 or 1000 of the same vehicle as stated above, but here is where things get different.

I place an order with my manufacturer for a product and they will give me a 6-8 week lead time as an automatic reply. As time gets closer to the 6-8 week time, I will get an update, but that is usually because I initiated the call.

What we have to consider are two things.

1) Almost all industries have moved to a "just in time" schedule. That means that they have ordered enough parts to finish what they are working on just in time, and when the get short and more orders come in, then the place another "just in time" order for parts.

Apple recently ran into that very same problem with their iPhone 4s and iPads coming out at the same time. This also affected a lot of other industries because of cross-over parts.

For an example there is a part of the iPhone 4s that is shared with manufacturers of lighting products, and when Apple made a bulk purchase of thousands of parts it all but crippled the lighting industry for several weeks.

2) It costs more money to stop and start a production line just to fit in 1 new product.

I would surmise that when the orders for Ram's are being put through that they run one model vehicle at a time. Wether they start off with the top of the line or the bottom of the line, they don't usually break that run until current orders are put through.

They will also set their runs up to build the same vehicles with the same options as much as possible as well, so as not to confuse (or interrupt) the assembly line.

Because I didn't order my vehicle to be a custom build, but rather took one off the lot I can't answer this, but when you ordered your's were you given an estimated lead time?

How many people that ordered their new trucks were given an estimated lead time, and how close were you to getting the truck within that estimated lead time?

Do I think that things could be better? Yes of course I do, but at the same time I can see how difficult it can be to give a more accurate date with all the variables that take place.

Again my background is not with the auto industry, but I suspect that all manufacturing works in a similar fashion.

In the end I hope you get what you want and soon, and too would love to see some pic when ready.

Good luck.

Redsmart I think the thing you have to keep in mind is we are not talking about a day or two or three not even a week. We are talking about months in some cases. If they told me August 1st and it was the 10th indont think that would be a big deal but in theses cases you get a date say for example 8/6. Then your told end of August or maybe September or even October. You dont get any straight answers from Dodge most of the time they just say they don't know.

JAMES has it right...its not even the delays that cause the aggravation...in my case, I cant say there've been any ... yet...course if there were, and my "production schedule" was interrupted, the probability is neither I, nor my dealer, nor DODGE CS would know anything about it.. And, as Billy would say...."theres the rub..."....just supply me with accurate, easily accessible info....I may not like it, and bitch away, BUT I'M A BIG BOY....TELL ME!!!!

Sounds like a tempest in a teapot to me. Yankee, you need to develop some patience. You sound like a father waiting for his first borne to arrive.
