Default Which year Cummins

I've currently got an '09 4x4 with a Hemi. I'm thinking about getting a diesel, and I've heard that some year models are more problematic than others. My budget won't let me pay $40k+ for a truck so it'll have to be used. Any suggestions on which year to go with or are they all pretty much the same?

Default Cummins, hmmm...

3rd gen is a good answer, I have a 2nd gen 24v (no death wobble, no 53 block or wick turned up). I saw a 2500 Hemi in town the other day (I assume they can tote), not sure of the cost though. I still drive a 5.9 magnum when not in the diesel. Have not looked into the 6.7's though (probably will in about 300,000 more miles). Depends on your needs and budget I would think.

But hey, I still yearn for an old V10 dually..............

I'd have to agree, a third gen is a good bet. There are certain years that have their own unique problems, but its probably a 10 page post to cover all those bases. The 5.9 Common Rail is pretty reliable while making good power.

A 2nd gen is also a good bet if you can find a nice one. They are simpler in design, have less electronics, and the injectors are cheaper. The make less power but also can haul down the best fuel mileage.

A 6.7 is also a great truck, they make a lot of power and in a 4th gen, are an improved truck. Its the emission stuff that turns people off to these trucks.

I've owner my 2004 for about 2 years now and love it. I've had to do nothing but normal maintance to it so far, and haven't had to touch the engine yet at 120,000 miles. That said, they can get expensive. For example I redid my rear brakes. All new parts, rotors, e-brake, pads, calipers and I did all the work myself, and it was almost $500 in parts. I hate to think what it would have cost if I had taken it somewhere.

I seem to recall a write-up a while back in Diesel Power magazine which suggested years up to 2007.5 as not only good years with few issues, but sans most emission control stuff.

I have a 2010 6.7 and I think it's a great truck I've had it since May of 2010 and have had no real issues just got a Ox sensor problem now at 60,000 miles but I'm doing the delete and that's going to be a problem of the past.
I highly recommend a 2010 Mega Cab used shop around.
