the stock trans is on borrowed time once you start modding. It's hard to put a hp number on it because even N/A guys are blowing it up too.

I agree. My though process was that you could prolong the life by limiting HP in 1st and 2nd which seem to be the weakest points in the trans.

I love my truck, but my biggest disappointment is the fact that the transmission in my Civic is capable of handling more HP than my truck.

that's pretty much what Ram did with their tuning. They introduced "Torque Management" to prolong the life of these transmissions when the HEMI hp was upped to 390.

Thinking of a drop in set to forge the rotating assembly. Just maybe use a 6.1 SRT crank and new rods and pistons? How much wider can I go piston wise on the 5.7? 4.14? what's that get me to about a 5.8L displacement?

6.1L crank uses a 32 tooth reluctor wheel and the new vvt 5.7L uses a 58 tooth, Manley does offer a 6.1L crank with a 58 tooth reluctor wheel but you'd need to pick up a snout spacer for the 5.7L timing set. There's not much room to over bore the chambers, and doing so reduces the number of potential rebuilds if something goes wrong. I have a 349cu in vvt block with a 6.1L crank and the bore is 3.937", the engine builder had to swap reluctor wheels and I just put the engine in this week and so far we haven't been able to get it to fire up, but I'm hoping it's just a startup tune issue.

MGH is sourcing that 6.1 Manley crank and we don't plan to bore unless needed.

I would agree with Mike on not boring it. I'm wishing my block was able to be rebuilt if required, but that's what I get for the price I paid on this block. I'll just build up my old block with a small stroker assembly

Just swap to a pre vvt block... Everyone's doing it! Well not everyone... I think the advantages of a pre VVT block out way whatever avantages you think you will get with a VVT motor... Show me a timeslip of a VVT car that is faster than the heavy hitting pre vvt block guys? You cant cuz those guys are running almost a full second faster or more... Easy to Tune, Big Cams, More Power, Faster Slips...
